Pilar Oneida Paneque (our dear Abita) was born in Camaguey, Cuba, on January 19, 1924, to Eloisa Ramirez and Marino Garcia. She was much loved by many -- her children Oneyda Maria, Victor Manuel, Jorge Juan, Eduardo Enrique, their spouses, twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as many family members and friends. Oneida grew up in Cuba with her extended family. In 1951, she moved to Chicago and started her own family. By 1957, the family had settled in Melrose Park where she continued to have new experiences while managing a home and exploring the new culture and climate. These years were filled with many challenges and successes including raising her children and providing aid to relatives fleeing Cuba. In the late 1980s, Oneida retired from her career as a social worker and moved to Miami to begin the next phase of her life. Here she continued to stay active making new friends and learning new skills including using a cell phone to take photos, look up information on the Internet, and send texts. This was a special time for her to share her wisdom and love of life with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a constant source of inspiration for many. After 99+ years of love and grace, God decided it was time for Oneida to join him in heaven. Her kindness and witty sense of humor will be missed.
