Pedro V. Roig — attorney, historian, educator, public servant, and veteran of Brigade 2506 — passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Throughout his life, Pedro dedicated himself to the defense of human rights, individual liberties, and the preservation of Cuban history and memory. Shaped by exile, service, and an enduring love for Cuba, his work reflected a lifelong commitment to freedom, education, public service, and the Cuban exile community. Pedro earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Miami and a Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University. As a member of the Florida Bar, he served as an attorney, expert witness on Cuban affairs, and court-appointed mediator. As an educator, Pedro founded Interamerican Military Academy, a source of great pride throughout his life. Through the academy, he helped shape young lives and remained deeply proud of the students and families who became part of the enduring IMA family. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush appointed Pedro to the National Advisory Board on Education, where he served for four years. In 2003, President George W. Bush appointed him Director of the Office of Cuban Broadcasting, overseeing Radio and TV Martí. He later received the Superior Accomplishment Award from the Broadcasting Board of Governors for his leadership and service. A passionate historian and author, Pedro published extensively on Cuba, freedom, and individual liberties. His works included Death of a Dream and The Cuban War of Independence, 1895–1898. In 2011, he joined the Institute of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami, where he continued contributing to the understanding of Cuba’s history and the exile experience. Above all, Pedro was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alina Roig; his children, Pedro C. Roig (Mabel), Rosa Kuper (Richard), Gustavo Roig (Jenni), and Tessy Villareal (Daniel); his grandchildren, Catherine Lopez (Alex), Peter Anthony Roig, Gustavo Roig, Sophia Roig, Daniela Villareal, David Kuper, Marcos Villareal, Carlos Roig, and Adriana Villareal; and his great-granddaughter, Emily Lopez. Pedro will be remembered for his intellect, conviction, resilience, and unwavering belief in freedom. Yet his greatest pride was his family. His love for his wife, Alina, and his unwavering devotion to his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter remained at the center of his life. His legacy will live on most deeply through the family he cherished, guided, and loved. Visitation services will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bernardo Garcia Funeral Home Kendall Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, followed by the graveside service at Miami Memorial Park.
